Shembaganur Museum of Natural History

mid

Jesuit padres established a college in the Palni Hills in 1895. Since then they have collected and preserved regional archaeological artefacts and specimens from the local flora and fauna. In the 1950s, these collections were presented as a museum. In these old days the museum was an odd assortment of dusty exhibits and formaldehyde jars. Some of this old charm is preserved (pun intended), but the current curator has done a great job of sorting this vast collection into orderly glass dispays and dioramas There are good descriptions (the English ones still have some potential for improvement), so that the visitor can get a good impression of the natural wonders that used to be found in the surrounding hills and that now have a chance to recuperate in the nature reserves and sanctuaries that are part of the Palni Hills.
